Internal Family Systems IFS™

for Executive & Leadership Coaching

“It is the nature of the mind to have parts and they are all valuable.”

How IFS™ Applies to Executive Leadership

IFS offers a powerful lens through which to understand your internal dynamics and how you interact with others (they have their own system too) in a leadership position and in life:

Relationship Dynamics: Use IFS principles to understand and resolve challenging dynamics and conflicts.

Choices & Decisions: Understand what drives your choices and decisions and use IFS principles to recognise when you are centred in Self-Leadership and when you’re not.

Emotional Intelligence: Understand yourself better, your emotions, reactions to others, judgements and how these impacts on the connections you make. It also helps you understand this in others too.

Self-Leadership: Authentic leadership. It’s getting the job done and it’s leading yourself and others with clarity, confidence, compassion and wisdom.

Leadership Coaching Using Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Why successful leaders still get stuck

You've achieved a lot.

You've built a career.

You've developed expertise, earned trust and taken on responsibility.

Yet despite all of that, there may still be moments when you find yourself second-guessing decisions, avoiding conversations, struggling with confidence or wondering why certain patterns keep showing up.

That's not unusual.

In fact, it's one of the most common themes I see in coaching.

Leadership is an inside job

Many leadership challenges aren't really about leadership skills. We are often told to gain more skills, to get better at, to improve - to go outside for more ‘something’. Leadership challenges are actually mostly about what's happening internally. In your inner system and in the system of your colleagues and peers.

The leader who is sinking in the detail but doesn’t ask for or accept help.

The leader who tackles challenges head on, yet avoids conflict.

The leader who’s confident and driven but is full of self-doubt.

The leader who says yes when they want to say no.

The leader who is exhausted but cannot stop pushing.

In a senior position, understanding ourselves creates more space and change than learning another leadership framework.

How Internal Family Systems helps leaders

Internal Family Systems provides a practical way of understanding the different Parts of ourselves that influence how we think, feel and behave.

Part of me wants the promotion. Part of me worries I'm not ready.

Part of me wants to challenge. Part of me wants everyone to like me.

Part of me wants better boundaries. Part of me feels guilty setting them.

When leaders understand these internal dynamics, they often experience greater clarity, confidence and choice.

The Internal Family Systems approach to Coaching

IFS™ is a non-pathological, non-diagnostic coaching paradigm originating in the USA and quickly become popular in the UK and Europe. It’s gets to the heart of the matter quickly and gently. Working with the IFS framework is a powerful way to get understand what’s going on behind those stubborn limiting beliefs, critical and sabotaging parts of us that resist change - and it’s sustainable. You get tools and techniques you can take away and practice on your own and with others - for life.

It’s not passive. There is upfront work and practice, some of your stubborn parts are well, very stubborn. The work is worth it! It’s been incredibly powerful for many of my clients. And, it’s not for everyone; it’s just one of many frameworks I use to coach. See the frequently asked questions below for more detail that might help you understand IFS.

IFS™ Coaching Newcastle

IFS™ is a trademarked and registered body of work by the IFS Institute (IFSI). My IFS Coaching training and on-going CPD in IFS is with the Internal Family Institute (IFSI) directly. I’m one of the few coaches in the UK trained by the IFSI, which is only accessible to experienced, qualified and accredited coaches, and is the only formal IFS training, and I’m now part of the IFSI faculty, supporting the Coaching Programme as a Practice Guide on the Foundations for Coaches course. I also have a Masters in Coaching and I’m a Senior Practitioner Coach accredited by EMCC.

How IFS™ Coaching is Different

Some, most, coaching focuses on performance, productivity, and mindset shifts. These tools and frameworks are useful, I use many of them in my practice. While they are useful, they often stay at the surface with a focus on goals and action plans. IFS offers me as a coach and you as a client, a lens that goes beyond the surface.

In the IFS paradigm we recognise we’re made up of Parts (like the inner critic, people-pleaser, high-achiever, rebel, perfectionist, avoider, cheerleader, optimist to name a few). We all have many parts, this is normal and no, it doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. The opposite - it’s part of being a human raised and living with other humans. Natural and normal.

These parts are not problems or obstacles to be attacked, banished, overcome or silenced. No doubt, these Parts have stuck around for a long time, despite you probably trying to beat them into submission and silence them.

We know they’re protective, adaptive responses we’ve developed over time that are doing an important job - we just don’t always fully understand or apprecaite what that job is. In IFS we don’t fight, cajole, manipulate, silence, banish or reframe these parts - we get to know them and their purpose. Why? Because our Parts are not always what they seem.

Underneath these parts, there’s a core Self. This is you, who you really are without all the strategic parts running the show, trying to staying in control of your fears, raising your defences, reacting, acting out or trying to ‘be’ something for someone else. It’s YOU; calm, clear, compassionate, courageous, creative, curious, confident, connected and so capable of running the show much more harmoniously.

In an IFS coaching session, instead of just asking “How do we change the behaviour?” we explore “Which part of you is showing up here? What does it need?”

This approach helps you:

·       Understand what drives your patterns, loops and behaviours.

·       Build self-trust and confidence.

·       Make decisions from your authentic Self - this is where you make the best decisions.

·       Lead with greater clarity, empathy, and resilience.

Working with an IFS™ Coach can give you a new perspective on how to help yourself when dealing with negative and difficult experiences. Once you become more aware of your own Self and when Parts of you try to tun the show, you will also see this in others - and this is gold when leading people and teams. You will takeaway tools to help you and you will learn how to use these tools with others.

The result? Change that’s not just tactical or temporary, but transformational.

Self-Led: What are the benefits of IFS Coaching for Leaders?

Coaching using the IFS paradigm is a path, a roadmap, to being more Self-Led and defining your Self-Leadership style. You will become more self-aware, less reactive and find that you develop increasing levels of:

Clarity. Being able to clearly ‘see’ the situation without the distortion of extreme highs and lows.

Curiosity. Becoming more curious about your Parts and experiences and how they serve you or don’t. You’ll become curious about others too.

Compassion. Usually developing a notion that’s there’s really no place for harsh judgement towards yourself or others, you’ll become more self-compassionate and more compassionate towards others - and this will not make you weaker or more vulnerable; the exact opposite actually. It’s the foundation of resilience.

Confidence. Assurance that comes from within. Confidence in your inherent worth regardless of others external reactions and what’s going on outside. Very different from ‘Fake it till you make it’ or egoic drive.

Courage. The steady courage to face difficult situations and emotions head on.

Calmness. The ability to feel your emotions and stay regulated, even amidst challenging circumstances - and to help others do the same.

Creativity. Creativity and innovation comes from within, when you are in Self-energy and have space from reactivity, judgements, assumptions and rumination.

Connectedness. The combination of all of this creates space to drop the mask, be yourself and connect more fully both internally (with all your own Parts) and externally (with others). Relationships become easier, more honest and flowing.

 What are the benefits Self-Leadership?

  • A continually improving self-awareness and way of finding balance between feeling emotions and not being overwhelmed by them - being able to understand yourself and others more effectively. It brings:

    • Resilience; that’s not about pushing through with gritted teeth or survival, it’s about improved decision making, creativity and alignment to weather the storm - and breathe again.

    • More fulfilling relationships through improved emotional range, communication and connection.

    • Improved decision making, productivity and problem solving.

    • A continually improving sense of fulfilment, well-being, outlook and joy! Yup the J word.

    • Joie de vivre. Lightness, spark, flow, energy, spirit…

I work with you to get to know all the parts of you that drive and hold you back so you can take the reins and lead from your Self. This is where the biggest changes happen. I will teach you how to do this, so you will have tools and techniques for life.
